Botox vs. Dermal Fillers: What's the Difference?

They are often mentioned together, but they do very different things. Here is a plain-language explanation of how each treatment works.

Two different tools

Neuromodulators such as Botox and Dysport temporarily reduce muscle movement in a targeted area. They are generally used where lines appear as a result of repeated expression.

Dermal fillers are gels that add support in areas where volume has shifted. They are used for structure and softness rather than movement.

How providers decide

During a consultation, your provider will look at your face at rest and in motion. Lines that appear mainly with movement often respond differently than lines visible at rest.

Many treatment plans use a combination, staged across visits rather than all at once.

What to ask at your consultation

Ask what a realistic outcome looks like for your anatomy, what maintenance would involve, and what the total cost of a plan is likely to be over a year rather than a single visit.
